At least that’s what one neighborhood is doing after “Barry the Barrel” was set up at West 144th Street and Montrose more than a year ago. It’s been faithfully guarding its intersection — and this seemingly bottomless hole — ever since.
From its West Park perch, Barry’s weathered all sorts of things, like polar vortex-esk temperatures:
Work injuries:
And even the Brelo verdict:
(Though, truth be told, this is Barry Jr. as Barry Sr. didn’t survive a snowplow incident over the winter.)
Adam Pate, a neighbor and the original creator of Barry’s Facebook page told Cleveland.com recently that the page was created for fun and on a whim, but of course it points toward bigger issues, like road repairs not being completed in a timely manner.
“Usually when you put up an orange barrel it means you’ll be back to fix something. But they just slapped a plate on it and a barrel and took a mulligan,” Pate told Cleveland.com.
Yesterday, though, it appears Barry was finally given company and progress on the intersection is underway. No word yet on how much longer Barry will hold court.

This makes me think I should create a Facebook page for the pair of barrels sitting under the carport in front of the big revolving door at Southwest General Health Center. Those have been there for over two years…maybe three…
It is a tad surprising that one of those “Your Tax Dollars at Work!” signs is not yards away — which features massive-size print for the names of career politicians needing free publicity for re-election purposes, medium-size print for the contractor who dished out sweet birthday cards throughout city hall for the project and real tiny print explaining what may actually be done over the many months….or years.
Hilarious!
“Polar votex-esk”? Seriously?
Some people need to find a hobby, and some people have found their creative hobby, lol. It makes him happy and gives a few laughs, so I say why not. Maybe I’ll go friend that thing just for a cheap smile or two.
