Started in the late ’80s, the National Beer Mile has become an international event thanks to news coverage from outlets such as CNN, ESPN and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Now in its second year, the National Beer Mile event series replaces water stands with beer stands. Runners drink a beer, run a lap and then drink another beer. In total, runners have the chance to drink four beers over the course of a mile-long course.

An after-party featuring food, games, local live music and more beer follows.

“It’s an event that draws 21 year olds and 51 year olds. Exercise, beer, party — those are three words that all generations can get behind,” says National Beer Mile co-founder Rob Goldstein in a press release. “Combining them all into one experience adds up to the Best. Saturday. Ever.”

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds will host the event. Registration costs $35 in advance, $55 on race day.

The Flats Beer Run had a wild ride for a few years – starting in the late 1980s – on the northeast Ohio road race circuit……and several beer companies sponsored road races – which were often linked to a national series – in the halcyon days of lacing up the waffled-soled shoes and takin’ it to the streets.
