Nearly 50 Huntington and FirstMerit Branches Set to Close in Northeast Ohio After Merger

Huntington National Bank has announced which Huntington and FirstMerit bank branches will close or merge. It comes after Huntington announced its purchase of FirstMerit earlier this year.

In all, more than 100 branches will close or merge, with almost 50 of those closings in Cleveland, Akron and Canton. The closings are due to banking overlaps in areas with both banks present. In all, about 16,200 employees are expected to lose their jobs. Employees at branches will be offered employment elsewhere but it’s unclear what or where those positions will be.

Other branches in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan are expected to close as well. In all, Huntington projects it will save about $2 billion after consolidation, with the sale expected to be finalized later this year.
