A “very early” green light has been given for some possible new apartments in the Flats.

This time, the new development would come on the west bank though.

Cleveland.com’s Michelle Jarboe has the details on what would be a pretty big boon to the west side of the river. The short version: 11 stories or more filled with fresh space for renters.

Downtown Ventures LLC has a contract to buy 2208-2210 Superior Viaduct, a two-story building wedged between the old bridge and Washington Avenue. Documents submitted to the City of Cleveland show a 64-unit apartment building on the 0.3-acre site. Those plans won very early approval – a conceptual thumbs-up – from the Cleveland City Planning Commission last week.

“There already is some residential momentum in the area,” said Daryl Kertesz, a member of Downtown Ventures and a principal at Activity Capital in Woodmere. “We feel that the greater west bank of the Flats is going to be the next frontier.”


There really isn’t much more than that to report at the moment — Kertesz won’t even identify any potential partners in the project, which, we reiterate, is in the very early phases. There could be a rooftop deck and a fitness area, for instance, but nothing is set in stone. Anyone who really wants to get into the nitty gritty details should visit Jarboe’s complete report.   1. This in my opinion would bring even more life to our beloved Cleveland I’m all in support of this. It may hopefully put a damper on the stereotype that Cleveland is not thriving..

  3. At this point I really hope they can preserve what historic/industrial buildings the West Bank has left. It will make for a far richer urban environment once this part of the city is built out, and is part of the city’s core heritage. Definitely all for this project, but just putting it out there because historic preservation is important.

  4. I would love to see the end of all those city blocks of parking lot…except in a way that still allows for the historic architecture to stand out, especially the Powerhouse and the Viaduct. It would be so cool to see a community down there.
