After shuttering its doors in September of 2007, the remains of Geauga Lake Amusement Park have been anything but a sight for sore eyes. Its owners, Cedar Fair, continues to operate the Wildwater Kingdom water park but the remnants of Geauga Lake are nothing more than a roller coaster graveyard.

Brings me to tears. I grew up on Cedar Point. My children grew up on Geauga Lake. Thinking of the many times we had such fun there at least 1-3 times in the summer. Now it is no longer there! Cedar Point, you gotta take a loan out to go there.I feel bad a lot of kids today will never know what fun it really was.
The depressing part comes from seeing the Big Dipper there, now probably so rotted away that even if someone did want to buy it, the costs would be so great its no longer feasible or cost effective. So its fate is sealed, hiding behind the fences until it collapses or gets knocked down. Very frustrating and sad.
Its a shame that smaller amusement parks are gone. The bigger parks are specializing in roller coasters and everybody that doesn’t ride those are losing out. At least someone is documenting whats left so we can show the next generations how things have changed. There isn’t much documentation left to help us remember the first amusement parks.
Man, this is so sad. In the mid 70’s through the mid 80’s we made two amusement park trips each summer. One to Cedar Point and one to Geauga Lake. Amazing memories. So sad to see now.
It would be amazing if someone could juxtapose pictures of the park that held the places of this now abandon land. I never knew of this place until a Facebook article popped up telling the whole fascinating saga of this park. I was truly amazed by the history, and honestly can’t believe it.
Holy Crap. I went here once as a kid, maybe I was ten, nd I want to say it was a girl scout thing, but I cant recall. I wnt in girl scouts very long. Anyway, through the years
I have thought about this place because I vividly recall this massive wave pool…and sometimes I would ask people if they had been there and I swear no one had ever heard of it. No joke I started wondering if this was a real place I had been too. I guess it was!! I had no idea it ws open as late as it was either. This is sad, and creepy.
that sucks 🙁 my dad’s company picnics were held at Geauga Lake….i always thought that Sea World would buy it and create 2 parks in one…sighs…guess not 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 I will always love that place cuz of my dad who is gone now and great memories i had there as a kid…thinks fondly…They had Grad Nite for kids graduating in 1986 and i went there instead of going to prom…what a great memory!!!!
Wow…..I was 17 in the Summer of 1981…Worked in the Games section. What amazing memories that I will cherish forever. One of the if not best Summer of my life. Never forget where you come from! RIP GL
They should re-zone it and allow a tiny home community.
Must have been a beautiful place once! Businesses fail and become terrible eyesores. The States need to purchase and revamp for living spaces, entertainment for the county, investmement purposes not let become eyesores. Maybe a rule of ownership is the problem needing modified by a Federal nuisance law!
At one time it was combined with Sea World when 6 Flags ran it. The park was awesome then. The last time I was there was in 2007. It wasn’t quite the same but it was still enjoyable. Would love to see it reopen!
This is heartbreaking. Every year Geauga Lake and cedar point were the places to go, even for those of us that had Kennywood closer.
went there as a kid, grew up and was married under the double loop on june of 82,mother in laws company picnics held there…..wow what memories…….took my kids there when they combined it to six flags,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,wow to see it now
🙁
I will never forget the Saturn Owners Sunday they had there in 2001. Unfortunately, it was the Sunday after 9/11 and people were still in shock. Half the people in the park wore anything they could dig out of their closets that said “New York” on it…in solidarity with NYC…I guarantee you will never see THAT again in our lifetimes.
And the rest wore more patriotic colors than on any July 4th I can remember.
Half the attractions were shut down because essential supplies…like water and beer and food…were unable to be delivered due to four days without air deliveries…and the delivery trucks were still on the roads.
When the gates opened, there was a flag-raising ceremony and people spontaneously broke into a chorus of “God Bless America.” It felt like the week after Pearl Harbor must have felt.
My wife and I were so relieved to get out of the house, after five days glued to the TV, that we had a pretty good time, even though half the place was padlocked. But not entirely. The roller coasters bothered us. It was all that screaming. You couldn’t help but think of what had just happened.
We thought it was the first weekend of WWIII. Maybe it was.
Chuckles the Clown
Many great memories at geauga lake .Two or three times a summer for like 16years😎 I now wonder…….whatever happened to the creepy guy that spun himself into oblivion on the Rotor???
It looks like the setting for a map from Call of Duty now!!!
Do you think when Cedar Point purchased it, they had intentions of closing it down all along, so they could drive the Geauga lake patrons to Sandusky? Does seem a little suspicious…..
