Augusta National is a land of decorum, rules (not all good ones, of course), the hushed tones of Jim Nantz, and the green jacket. The Masters holds a stratospheric reverence among golf fans. It’s a pilgrimage, an honor, a legend.

It’s also a place to get shit-housed while watching the best golfers in the world.

Combine those two and you have a recipe for what happened to Clayton Price Baker, a 40-year-old Ohio man whose mugshot you see to the right.

Baker was drunk enough and in awe enough of his surroundings that he tried to scoop sand from a sandtrap into a cup as a souvenir. Not cool, especially not in the buttoned-down world of The Masters. A few blades of grass would have been an easier, safer score.

Via the Augusta Chronicle (via Deadspin):

Richmond County sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay said Clayton Price Baker, of Ohio, slipped under the ropes following the tournament and attempted to put the sand in his cup.

After a short foot chase by Augusta National security and sheriff’s deputies, Baker was apprehended and charged with disorderly conduct.

A tradition unlike any other indeed.
