Haven’t voted in awhile? You may get knocked off the voter registration rolls soon.
Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose last month requested lists of voters who haven’t voted in six years from boards of elections in all of Ohio’s 88 counties.
LaRose wanted the boards of elections to send those lists by mid-July and also mail out final reminders to those on the lists that their voter registration is about to expire.
If the Ohio residents on those lists — 235,610, to be exact — don’t reply to that final notice, they will be removed from the voter registration rolls by Sept. 6.
Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an Ohio law requiring the voter purges. The following January, then-Secretary of State Jon Husted notified 275,000 voters that they risked removal from voter registration rolls.
Critics of the law say it unnecessarily keeps some voters from exercising their right to vote and that not everyone gets the final notice mailers the state sends. Proponents, however, say that many of those on the lists have moved out of the state or died.
Some community groups and nonprofits including the League of Women Voters have also requested the lists of inactive voters and intend to use them to help those voters re-register if they wish.
