“Until then,” Chimes wrote in an email to the local Sierra Club (and forwarded to Scene), “delivery of the local news, information and shopping product will continue each Wednesday, via the USPS or carrier delivery to driveways.”
Chimes did not respond Wednesday night and Thursday morning to requests for comment regarding the decision to cease publication, but recent efforts by suburban residents to negotiate mail delivery, and a resolution passed Monday by Cleveland City Council “urging” the Plain Dealer / cleveland.com to “immediately stop littering public property” can’t have helped.
Plain Dealer depot manager Cathy McBride was not at her desk when we called for comment.
Bob Rosenbaum, who started the “ShopCLE: Stop Littering Out Streets” Facebook group, (and who co-chairs the Heights Observer advisory committee) posted to the group’s page that he didn’t think residents “making a stink” was the sole reason ShopCLE opted to call it quits. He speculated that advertiser support might be insufficient to cover mail delivery, or at least insufficient to make mail delivery make financial sense.
“The goal was to end their dumping of papers throughout the community, and I’m glad that’s going to happen.” Rosenbaum wrote in an email to Scene. “I don’t take pleasure in the paper being discontinued. But I’d also say that if the economic feasibility of a media product depends on tossing it from the windows of a moving car, it probably shouldn’t be published at all.”

This flimsy advertising tab was marketed as a “local news, information and shopping product”? It simply shows the desperation of a failed media company to paint a smiley face on a rusted out newspaper vending machine.
Some moron hired to deliver the first issue in Ohio City drove down the alleys and threw the papers willy nilly north and south. Just what we needed- more trash! Called to complain and maybe they did send someone out to pick up the fishwrappers.
Please gather these from public property; where most of them are found and return them to the Plain Dealer. Just drop them by West side of Tiedeman Road near or in the driveway.
I live south of Shaker Square. When they first started delivering them, they were at the two empty houses next to mine but not our yard/driveway. When the delivery person finally got their act together, I got the paper maybe 2-3 times. That’s it. Haven’t seen one in about a month. Have noticed though for the past two weeks, the Marc’s circular is in the Tuesday mailing of circulars now.
I called the PD after a couple of weeks of serious littering in my neighborhood (West Park) and I made a stink…they melted away like April snow. Had to raise hell to get rid of them, though.
Haven’t seen any sign of them for the last few weeks…boo fucking hoo. This brainstorm was the dumbest idea since New Coke.
