The Republican National Convention begins today — and with it the rancorous discourse on all manner of political and social issues du jour. Samaria Rice, the mother of Tamir Rice and a vocal critic of the Cleveland Division of Police, says that she’ll be staying far away from the downtown goings-on.

Here, The Guardian speaks with Rice about how the national discussion on police use of force has evolved since Tamir was shot and killed in November 2014.

  1. Too bad she didn’t value her kid’s life enough to teach him not to go around waving a realistic looking gun replica in a public park.

  2. Let’s just hope that Loehmann and Garmback do the same before they gun down some tourists.
