Somehow, ROB FORD was allowed.

  • Somehow, “ROB FORD” was allowed.

Thousands of Ohioans submit requests to the Ohio BMV each year to personalize their license plates. The vast majority of those are approved and Mom slaps a new plate on her car and gleefully drives around while letting everyone know that she is “NO 1 MOM,” for example.

And then there are folks who submit requests for vanity license plates like the ones below — the ones that fit as much outright vulgar, racist and plain old hateful speech into seven characters one could possibly dream.

The Special Plates Review Committee, a seven-member board that includes folks from high up on the BMV chain as well as customer service associates, takes a look at each submission and, sometimes with the help of the internet, decides if it’s suitable for public road consumption. A lot of times they don’t even need the internet — there’s a database with previously rejected plates and word combinations that is continually updated.

And if you’ve ever wondered to what depths of juvenile jokes and depraved linguistic insults Ohio drivers would like to dip, you have to look pretty low.

Every once in awhile we like to file a public records request for rejected plates to explore those low lows. Below, the complete list of 225 rejected plates, courtesy of the BMV, from June 2013 – April 2014. Do enjoy.

  1. When you did the same story three years ago, there 75 rejections in six months…so 225 in ten months means the number of rejections has almost doubled in just three years…WTF? Are people in Ohio making that many more stupid requests? Or is the BMV just getting more persnickety?

About twenty years ago, OHIO Magazine ran a list of roughly 200 “banned words and phrases” that were forbidden on the blue-and-white “Heart of it all” plates…that’s right…just 200…total…and now there are dozens banned EACH MONTH? Ridiculous.

I can understand why they might ban KKK or H8MICH (or anything else with “H8” in it), but I am a diehard supporter of a non-Ohio MLB team and when I asked for a six-letter vanity plate with FAN included, it was “No dice.”

Why? Because…FAN refers to the rear end of the human anatomy…the “fanny”…go figure. I am not making this up. They were dead serious. It was even mentioned in the OHIO Magazine story…”fan” means…”fanny”…and “fanny” means “ass”…for real…and this is straight from the lips of those wonderful bureaucrats who actually use “Urban Dictionary” as their Reject Bible.

Have you ever actually looked up anything on that site? It’s pretty much a sick joke…yet the BMV swears by it. No wonder folks swear AT them. Jeebus H. Chrysler.

Yet, for years afterward, all over Northeast Ohio, I saw letter-number combinations beginning with KIK and KYK. That’s the pretzel logic of Columbus, and our wonderful BMV, folks…

    Chuckles the Clown

  2. If they didn’t ban these plates and approved one, how quick do you think they’d get sued by someone who was offended by one of those plates?

  3. I for one am glad we don’t have anyone driving around with BOOGR on their license plate. Just think of the kids! Once they see that, they’ll be ruined for life.

  4. The funniest part is they reject these, and yet MASS PRODUCED the ones that start with FUP and FN _____

  5. After seeing STFU PLZ, I felt obligated to call and ask if anyone at the BMV knew what “stfu” meant. I have also seen both QQQQ and QQQQ II (Roman numeral 2). I guess they don’t catch them all.
