  1. Since the goal of the NBA regular season is filling arena dates, it is surprising that league officials have not entertained another layer of playoff games to spread the wealth around a little more. Give the one through four conference seeds a first round bye and have a best-of-3 series for seeds 5 v 12, 6 v 11, 7 v 10 and 8 v 9, with the winners in these “rat-tails” scooting into the best-of-7 playoff brackets. The better clubs get a week off once the regular season concludes, which may be incentive for more teams to actually play the final stretch of games with a sense of urgency — instead of going through the motions in quasi-exhibition contests.
