Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald has been angling for the Democratic National Convention to come to Cleveland. He found out at the DNC in Charlotte last summer that Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman would love to land it as well.
In a speech in Columbus on Saturday, FitzGerald said he’d cooked up the “perfect” compromise: Two days in Columbus and then two days in Cleveland. Whoa, Ed! Perrrrrfect!
The PD’s Henry Gomez promptly dismissed Fitz’s epiphanic diplomacy, given (among other things) the monolithic media superstructures which emerge around national conventions and the nasty logistics of hotel reservations.
Nonetheless, it’s reasonable to expect from the County Executive a more pronounced willingness to compromise and less aggressive rhetoric in the general direction of Columbus. He’s learning the ropes even as he calculates his march toward the Governor’s seat.
