Police arrived to search a warrant on E. 125th St. last night. They were looking for Danny Withers, a 21-year-old suspect in the robbery of a Fifth Third Bank on September 21.

When the arrived at the home, Withers’ grandmother let three officers into the house.

NewsNet5 reports that officers looked in a closet in the house. Withers jumped out “with his hand raised.”

Detective Zola fired a shot at the man, hitting him in the chest and killing him.

Withers was unarmed.

The 11-year vet and the two other officers at the house have been put on administrative leave for three days.

After the jump, video of Chief McGrath talks about the shooting.

Vince Grzegorek has been with Scene since 2007 and editor-in-chief since 2012. He previously worked at Discount Drug Mart and Texas Roadhouse.

  1. MAYBE HE HID IN THE CLOSET OUT OF FEAR & REALIZED THERE WAS NOWHERE TO RUN….BUT SEEMS TO ME LIKE COMING OUT OF ANY PLACE WITH YOUR HANDS RAISED IS SURRENDERING & NOT A REASON TO BE SHOT & KILLED!!!!

  2. another police shooting, another police officer walks away scott free. WHERE IS JUSTICE,oh I forgot she’s BLIND

  3. He should have yelled through the closet door that he was coming out with his hands up.
Every nite on the news I hear about crime in Cleveland. Coming from Boston I’m not used to this taking so much air time. ( Cleveland is a beautiful city btw..)

  4. This idiot robbed a bank while on his cell phone the entire time. Cell phones come with a monthly bill. So it’s not like he is starving or totally down and out. I would starve to death before I robbed a bank or stole from someone else.
Dan Zola did us all a favor by taking out this thug. If every police officer shot a thug a day, we would all be better off. These thugs don’t give a crap about anyone else, but the ignorant folks in this country just continue to put up with the crap these thugs put out.
Withers should of went looking for a job that day, instead of putting some teller at the bank into a terrifying position of not knowing what this thug would do next. Withers had no respect for the police or community he lived in, so have no pity on him. Have pity on Officer Zola and the other Polce Officers who have to deal with these thugs EVERY DAY and not go insane from the BullCrap they see EVERY DAY. Most of society has no clue the what these thugs try to get away with instead of trying to be a plus to society.
I Thank Officer Zola for doing me the favor of protecting me and my daughters from this thug that would have NO mercy on me or my family.

  5. He’s a dumbass for jumping out and surprising them, and for robbing the bank. Luckily, we are not short on dumbasses.

  6. Sharing just about anything on Facebook nowadays seems like second nature to several. One group of young bank robbers shared their exploits on Facebook. This revealing, however, led to them all being arrested. Police officers checked Facebook after an unknown tip alerted them to the appearance of the postings. I found this here: Facebook posts lead to bank robbery arrests

  7. I think its funny, how you assholes refer to my dead brother as a thug or dumbass. Yall idiots dont understand where we’ve come from. Yall are outsiders looking it. && with that being said good luck in life. We’re all gonna need it.
