Jessie Smith, a 27-year-old Akron man, allegedly led police on a 7 to 8 minute chase through the city in the early morning hours of July 28. He was in a 1995 Honda Civic with his girlfriend when they began arguing; she left the car, he drove on. As cops were interviewing her, Smith drove by in the vehicle and they attempted to pull him over. He was not having any of that.

One wrinkle: While being chased, Smith grabbed his girlfriend’s cell phone, which she had left in the car, and began recording, according to the ABJ. You can hear him describing his “last ride” as he hit speeds of 80 mph at times and saying things like “I”m about to go down for 10 or better, five or better at least” and bragging that he’d been stealing cars “since I was about 13, 14.”


So far Smith is charged with willful fleeing and obstructing official business, both felonies. He was also under probation at the time of the chase, had warrants out for his arrest and allegedly violated a protection order.
