Local gem Huntington Beach made USA Today’s short list of who’s got the best freshwater beach in America.

The poll is part of their Readers’ Choice 2016 voting asking readers to choose the best of the best in America. If you recall, Cleveland is also on their voting list for best beer city in America.

Here’s what USA Today has to say about it.

Cleveland natives have been enjoying this signature strand for eons, and these days it’s cleaner than ever, having been awarded Blue Wave designation by the Clean Beaches Coalition several years back – it was the first Ohio beach to receive this environmental distinction. In summertime, eager bathers come to enjoy the cooling waters of its sandy, half-mile lakefront, along with ice cream from the popular on-site concession stand. Huntington Beach’s sweeping shoreline views don’t hurt, either.

Huntington Beach is currently ranked in the top five for the poll. Voting ends at 12 p.m. on March 14, and you may vote once per day.

  1. Went there over 4th of July weekend this past summer. Had to leave because how disgusting the water was. Seeing a small child with a full diaper wading in green water surrounded by trash and cigarette butts was the tipping point. Granted it is much cleaner than Edgewater and Euclid Beach it still has a ways to go.

  2. You made a mistake when you went on a holiday weekend…that’s when the trash is at a maximum at Huntington…and I don’t mean refuse or garbage, either. The lowlifes come out from the heart of the city and bring their disgusting and filthy habits with them. The kids don’t know any better, but neither do their parents.

Go on a non-holiday weekend or a weekday and it’s heaven out there…also no loud, rowdy, football-tossing thugs–and far fewer people who have decided to turn their bodies into walking Jesus billboards and graffiti canvases.

I love that beach, but I won’t go near it on a holiday weekend. That was your first big blunder.

  3. When I went, the beach was beautiful. One item I would wish for is an escalator!!! Those steps are a killer !!!!!
