No, you’re not hallucinating, Dan Chaon. Yes, that was a minor earthquake in Northeast Ohio this morning shortly after 10:50 a.m. that was felt from Lorain out west to Ashtabula in the east. Preliminary reports from the United States Geological Survey put it at about a 4.0 on the magnitude scale, which is to say stronger than some recent earthquakes but still minor, and centered about 4 kilometers north-northwest of Eastlake.

Minor quakes on the North Shore are not an uncommon experience — there have been some 200 over 2.0 magnitude levels recorded since the birth of America — with the eastern most quakes centered around Lake County and some of the more modern quakes being tied to fracking.

If history is any guide, residents will call 911 for no reason but to ask hey, was that really an earthquake?

  1. I’m a Displaced San Franciscan. No offense, you don’t know what an earthquake is. In San Francisco this would just be considered ‘foreplay’…

  2. WTF are the police and fire department supposed to do about an earthquake? Why did all these paranoid moronic sheeple call 911 at the rate of 50 calls a minute? There have been dozens of small quakes in the same area for decades…you can even see them pinpointed on maps of earthquake activity. A 4.0 is enough to get your attention but it is really not such a BFD. I remember a couple of 5.5 quakes in Illinois that woke me up…and my wife lived through a 7.0 in San Diego that scared the crap out of everybody. Luckily, it was out in the sesert and not near the coast…or she might not have survived it. It’s embarrasing how many pussies live in Northeast Ohio. Really…calling 911? Why? For a minor earthquake/ Get a goddam grip!
