The Cleveland Clinic has announced that the hospital's 2018 fundraiser gala will not take place at the Donald Trump-owned Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla.'s Steve Koff first reported the news Thursday.

"After careful consideration, Cleveland Clinic has decided that it will not hold a Florida fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago in 2018. We thank the staff of Mar-a-Lago for their service over the years," read the Clinic's statement, as reported by Koff.

The Clinic came under fire for holding the event at the Florida resort. But the hospital system has held its gala there for the past eight years, and when Scene inquired about an open letter calling for the Clinic to cut ties, a spokesperson said that the event was planned "long before" Trump was elected president.

As recently as last Friday, the Clinic had decided to keep the event at the Trump resort.

"For us, this is more about raising money to help our clinical programs and patient care," a spokesperson told ABC News. "This is not a political statement by the Cleveland Clinic by any means."

But Trump's response to weekend events in Charlottesville, where white nationalists and radical right wing groups convened for demonstrations and where one woman was killed when an Ohio man drove into a crowd of counter-protesters, likely factored into the Clinic's "careful consideration."

Outgoing Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove was a member of a business advisory council that reported to Trump. They voted to disband this week, saying that the President's comments on the Charlottesville violence were inappropriate.
