ChamberFest Cleveland Kicks Off Its 2019 Season and the Rest of the Classical Music to Catch This Week

June marks the return of ChamberFest Cleveland, which kicks off its 2019 season with a variety of dynamic chamber music concerts this week. The season opens on Thursday, June 13 at 7:30 pm in Mixon Hall at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Under the Influence. Hear Beethoven’s Clarinet Trio in B-flat, Penderecki’s String Trio, Heinz Holliger’s Two Pieces for Solo Piano, and Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat, all performed by festival guest artists.

Things get up to tempo on Friday, June 14 at 7:30 pm in CIM’s Kulas Hall with In Full Swing. The evening features Bernstein’s Clarinet Sonata, John Adams’ Shaker Loops, and Dvořák’s Piano Quartet in D. A pre-concert special at 7:15 pm features The Deng Sisters (Athena, 16, piano, and Corina, 11, violin) from CIM’s preparatory division performing Ravel’s Tzigane and three of Dvořák’s Romantic Pieces. The girls have been playing together their entire lives, and are sure to impress.



Turning/Tipping Points on Saturday, June 15 at 7:30 pm in Mixon Hall includes Louise Farrenc’s rarely-heard Clarinet Trio in E-flat, Hindemith’s Viola Sonata, Op. 11, No. 4, and Brahms’ lively String Quintet No. 2 in G. At 6:45 pm, Adam Golka and Roman Rabinovitch present Golka’s enchanting arrangement of Debussy’s La mer for two pianos. Tickets for ChamberFest and details on their full 2019 season available here.

The Cleveland Trombone Seminar returns this week with a variety of concerts performed by guest faculty. Mark Lusk performs on Tuesday, June 11 and Peter Ellefson plays on Thursday, June 13, both at 7:00 pm. The Seminar showcases a chamber music concert featuring participants and associates on Thursday, June 13 at 6:00 pm, and the weekend concludes with the Trombone Choir Concert on Sunday, June 16 at 2:00 pm. All events take place in Drinko Hall at Cleveland State University, and tickets for the faculty concerts can be purchased at the door prior to the events. ENCORE Chamber Music presents the Cavani String Quartet on Friday, June 14 at 7:00 pm. The Cleveland area favorites will perform Mozart’s Quartet in G, Martinů’s Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola, and Dvořák’s Quartet No. 12 in F (“American”). The festival continues its Sunday Unplugged series at 2:00 pm on June 16 featuring Mathieu Herzog, viola, in Dvořák’s String Sextet in A and Brahms’ String Quintet No. 2 in G. The Neave Trio performs piano trios by women composers as part of Underground Classical at 8:00 pm on Saturday, June 15. Anna Williams, violin, Mikhail Veselov, cello, and Eri Nakamura, piano will tackle trios by Rebecca Clarke, Amy Beach, Cécile Chaminade, and Jennifer Higdon, presented with projections by Andrew Ringler and Bing Lin. This presentation of underperformed works will take place at Praxis Fiber Workshop in Collinwood, and is listed as freewill offering.
