We have a sad update on this story. While many of us thought we had a few more weeks to enjoy Minh Anh before it closed, that date has arrived sooner than expected. The Vietnamese restaurant will close this weekend. Here is the latest statement from the family, followed by our original article:

From the Minh Anh Restaurant Family: We are so very sad to say that this weekend will be our last weekend open. It was a surprise to us, as we thought we had until October, but this Sunday, September 12th will be our last day of serving this wonderful community.

From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank every single person who visited us and supported us over our 37-year run. I know it’s just a restaurant, but really it represented opportunity for my family - who came to the United States as refugees from the Vietnam War. It was theirs, a tangible piece of the American dream. They came from absolutely nothing, essentially just the clothing on their backs, to become business owners in the United States. And through their years of hard work, they made it an integral, indispensable part of the Detroit Shoreway community.

Our customers, you all, were so supportive of our small restaurant and became like family. We will always remember this parcel of land near the corner of 54th and Detroit Ave. as a place where our family’s lives in America took root and a place that brought immense joy, not only to us, but to the entire community.

We will be open our normal hours this weekend Friday (11-8:30), Saturday and Sunday (12-8:30). Please stop by, say hello, say goodbye, and have one last spring roll or an egg roll vermicelli. I am not sure what the new owner has planned for the future, but exterior remodeling is set to start next week.
Thank you again to all of you. We have truly loved serving you the best Vietnamese food we could. Please continue supporting your local businesses and building up this community. It is so worth it.

Original Scene article from 08-11-21

For many diners in Cleveland, Minh Anh Restaurant (5428 Detroit Ave., 216-961-9671) was where we first learned to love pho, the Vietnamese beef noodle soup. While pho is now available all across the region, this modest restaurant on Cleveland's near-west side was a pioneer in the field.

Opened by Camla Wadsworth in 1984, Minh Anh's days sadly are numbered. The owner has announced that she will be closing the restaurant in October, but she said that there is no specific date as of now.

That's the bad news. The good news is that there's still time to savor that pho, those heavenly crepes, that excellent egg roll vermicelli and the amazing shrimp coconut milk. No word yet as to what will happen with the space, but we'll update this when we find out.
