Oberlin College sets the stage tonight for the American premiere of Olga Neuwirth’s adaptation of Lost Highway. The Austrian composer’s musical is a straight retelling of David Lynch’s 1997 mindfuck about a jazz musician who suspects his wife is cheating on him. After she’s killed, he transforms into a young mechanic and begins a new life.

The production features a full cast alongside the school’s Contemporary Musical Ensemble, which performs Neuwirth’s avant-garde score. A campus TV crew even shot film that unspools during the play. After its debut this weekend, the show travels to New York for a two-night run at Columbia University.
