This weekend, brothers Ramesh and Sanjeev Sharma quietly opened Star of India Garden inside the Market Hall at Van Aken District. The stall is an offshoot of the long-running Lakewood restaurant India Garden. The project was first announced late last year after Ninja City closed their stall at the market.
The arrival marks the return of Indian cuisine to the Market Hall, filling a gap that has been felt since Doug Katz closed Chutney B back in 2021. Shaker also recently said goodbye to local favorite Saffron Patch, which relocated to a new home at Legacy Village.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Star of India Garden to the Van Aken District,” says Jesse Rathner, General Manager at Van Aken District. “They bring another level of diversity to our tenant mix, both in cuisine and in the incredible operators behind the concept. India Garden has a rich history on the west side of Cleveland and has built a reputation as one of the best Indian food operators in the community. We’re thrilled that Sonny and his team chose Van Aken to establish their east side presence, and we can’t wait to introduce them to the Shaker Heights community.”
Fans of the Lakewood restaurant will find a similar albeit “condensed” version of the menu at the Market Hall. The offerings include a wide selection of appetizers, biryani, meat, seafood and vegetarian curries, and bread dishes.
Star of India Garden is open for lunch and dinner, including carry-out, from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
