For two and a half years, Tremont General Store (2418 Professor Ave., 216-288-7167) has been the place to go for local food products, home and garden equipment, pet and chicken food, and even plants, herbs and seed packets. In short, it was a bonafide general store.

All that comes to a close on October 31, when owner Kevin Kubovcik closes the doors for good.

“You can’t keep digging that hole,” Kubovcik says. “Retail isn’t really strong in Tremont unless you’re a bar or restaurant. It’s tough. It was a great experience for two and a half years but it just didn’t work out.”

Kubovcik says that items will be marked down in an attempt to move inventory.

  1. I live in Tremont and the place is a really nice store, but it just doesn’t make sense for the demographics around the area. It’s pricey and has limited options. I’d love a place that sold bacon and eggs, but I don’t need their organic, grass fed pork belly, or cage free eggs. What Tremont needs is a smallish grocery store, similar to the Constantino’s in the Warehouse District. Hopefully something goes in here quick, it’s a very prime location.

  2. Totally agree with the comment above. There were rumors that Constantinos was coming to Tremont for years; however, kind of like Michael Symon’s false promises to rebuild at Lolita site nothing has ever happened.

  3. Always smelled like half digested semen in there…other than that an outstanding establishment.

  4. Right place, wrong neighborhood and demographic. Should have been in Lakewood, not Tremont.

  5. i actually think it was a great location. I loved the concept and anticipated the opening (Tremont resident) but the most basic items you need and you “run to the store” weren’t there. I wanted something that saved me a trip to a grocery store, not expecting that much variety but staples….like limes.
