The barflies at Willoughby’s Witz End probably thought Jerry Springer was lurking backstage late Saturday night, when Slight Buzz and his band hopped onstage for their third and final set. As the bandmates retuned their guitars to launch into something rockabilly, an elderly lady with tattoos clearly seen on her exposed stomach started to mouth off at a young woman sitting at a nearby table.
“The first thing I heard was, ‘Don’t you call my daughter a slut, you bitch!’ Then the melee was under way,” recalls Buzz, who accompanied the brawl with a tasteful, one-sided version of “Dueling Banjoes.” “She punched the young-looking girl square in the mouth. After that, it was anyone’s guess what was going on over in the corner.”
Until after the show ended. After the dust had cleared and patrons were scrambling to the bar for last call, Buzz noticed a few clumps of hair on the floor and the top of the pool table soaked in beer. “I looked at somebody and said, ‘Dude, this is kinda nice being on the receiving end of the entertainment for once,” laughs Buzz. “What a fucking weekend.” — Cris Glaser
