It’s been difficult to patiently wait all these months for Doug Katz to open the doors to his diner-car diner, but that wait finally is over. After a week of friends and family meals, the Katz Club Diner officially opens today, Tuesday May 21, for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Katz says that while technically open, seating will be limited throughout the week to give the crew a chance to fine tune the operation. But other than that, “It’s going great,” he reports from the front lines.
Unlike previous failed businesses at that location, Katz is operating a 48-seat diner in the northern car only. The Katz Club, a weekends-only cocktail lounge and private dining room, opens later this week in the southern car. The massive kitchen that joins the two cars will be utilized not only for the diner and club, but also for Fire, and Katz’ growing catering business.
The expansive all-day menu is loaded with classic deli and diner fare. Start your day with lox, eggs and onion or corned beef hash. For lunch consider the Greek salad and a Club sandwich, or perhaps matzo ball soup followed by a house-roasted roast beef sandwich. Home-style hot entrees include pan-fried chicken, stuffed cabbage, or chicken a la king served on waffles.
Prices range $8 to $12 for sandwiches, $10 to $20 for entrees, and $6 to $12 for breakfast dishes.
