Art Modell died early this morning, and just because someone is dead doesn’t mean you have to say nice things about them. There was plenty of good buried in that dessicated husk, sure, but there was also a unrepentant asshole who stole the heart and soul of Cleveland — yes, with help from other unrepentant assholes. So how are we feeling this morning? No differently than when Art inspired this annual series in Scene twelve years ago. May he find Heaven, but never Canton.

Below, clips from the final Browns game at Municipal Stadium, because we’re gluttons for tears.

  1. i’m a life-long Steeler fan (sorry) from Alliance,Ohio. But i’ll admit this video brought tears to my eyes. For many reasons! Gone are the good old days of a rivalry steeped in tradition. Gone are the days of innocence and flat out hard nosed football. but what isn’t lost in Cleveland are the diehard fans that deserve to have a winning team! Bring back the rivalry. i’m sick of the ratbirds already!!! Best of luck this season Cleveland. No one has to know i’m secretly rooting for you too.

  2. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Brownies….
Modell Not so much, if one knows how he basically stole the team from Paul Brown, we won’t even mention the move….
Well…Always respect the dead but he is no hero in CleOh….
