This photo was taken moments ago from Scene HQ on W. 9th St. downtown. The Columbus Road Lift Bridge, which has been under construction for more than a year, is at this moment being transported by barge along the Cuyahoga to its final resting spot, where it’s expected to arrive sometime after 2 p.m.

The bridge span, per @SharetheRiver, weighs 2 million pounds. Folks who’d like to go watch the bridge as it floats down the river — riveting, no doubt — are invited to flock to a designated viewing area at Merwin’s Wharf

Don’t get too excited just yet. The span will take about 60 days to fully install. The bridge is expected to be open to vehicular traffic by mid-October.

Among other things, this means the Scene editorial staff can now access Hoopple’s by foot. Taco Tuesday, here we come.

  1. HOLY FUCK IT’S A FUCKING BRIDGE ON A FUCKING BOAT. CAN WE GET SOME PICTURES OF THIS OR WHAT.

  2. Not a big deal. Unless you’re one of thousands of people who would like to get their most direct access to work back. Or if you’re a business owner whose livlihoods have been jacked up for a year.

  3. I hate when people complain about infrastructure fixes. Does it suck for a while? Sure does. Is it WAY WORSE if the bridge fails? Absolutely.

You can’t say things like ‘I hate potholes’ and ‘I hate road paving’ in the same breath and be taken seriously.
