[image-1]On Oct. 26, 2017, a Cuyahoga County jail corrections officer named Martice Campbell struck an inmate with a closed fist twice while the inmate, who posed no threat, was sitting at a table.

That’s according to a disciplinary letter from the county’s human resources department on Dec. 12 to Campbell informing him he’d been fired. (You can read the full letter below.)

Few additional details are available, other than a note that once the inmate was on the floor, Campbell stood over him in a threatening manner. The incident was caught on video and Campbell admitted to the assault during the course of the internal investigation.

The dismissal caps an ignominious year for the county corrections department. 2017 saw an officer arrested and convicted for dealing drugs off duty, an officer prosecuted for illegally using a police database to stalk his ex-wife and her boyfriend, supervisors disciplined for improper investigations into alleged use of force complaints, officers disciplined for bringing jail issues to the attention of local media, a steady stream of inmate/inmate and inmate/guard altercations, and a persistent problem of smuggled contraband, including drugs, making its way into cells.

  1. And you morons just gave them a shitload of money to install state of the art cameras throughout the jail. Meanwhile they are giving inmates one fuckin roll of toilet paper a week. Thats to wipe your ass nose and sink with!

    Can we fund inmates basic human needs before installing fucking cameras!? The only upside is how many more scumbag corrections officers they catch at this shit with the cameras! But they will prolly be malfunctioning when an officer is involved. Time will tell wont it. Meanwhile give two fuckin rolls of shot paper a week will ya!?

  3. Dont be so quick to judge, there are two sides to every story. We have no idea what the inmate did leading up to this incident. The C/O knowing he was on tape certainly must have had reason to behave in this manner. He likely figured his actions were justifiable once the entire tape was seen.

  4. Im just curious if the journalist has contacted the CO involved when writing this article? I highly doubt anyone would purposely assault someone while knowing they were being recorded. Im also interested to know if that letter was obtained legally. This department is clearly having some serious issues and the way the dismissal letter details the events in question seems highly unrealistic.

  5. Just a side note to the man with the toilet paper issues:
    Consider keeping yourself out of the county jail where you can buy as much toilet paper and even baby wipes if youre feeling fancy. Thats assuming you have a job to make an honest living.
    In other words if you dont like the service keep your butt out of jail.
