Guess he forgot about Cleveland going into default while he was mayor.
Um, Lisa, Were those the same banks that put Cleveland in default that are taking everyone’s houses and paying .001% on your savings account?
Right on – it wasn’t Dennis’ fault that Cleveland went into default. For goodness sakes when
are people going to realize that the bank was trying to force him to sell Muny Light – today Cleveland Power. Enlightened Clevelanders? Debatable if they still don’t get it re the default.
Dennis didn’t put Cleveland into default, George Forbes and the Illuminating Co.were trying to cut a backroom deal with the BANKS and were pushing very hard to cut a sweetheart deal . DENNIS KUCINICH Blocked the deal and found a way to send it to WE THE PEOPLE for a PUBLIC VOTE , and literally kicked all there butts . He was also responsible for getting a $105,000,000.00 (MILLION DOLLAR) court award against the Illuminating Co. For the problems they caused the City of Cleveland. Then he lost the office of Mayor to George Voinovich A Republican that took credit for saving the city. ( BY THE WAY CLEVELAND MUNICAPLE LIGHT STILL BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE OF CLEVELAND) Thanks you DENNIS !!!
Yes, Dennis saved Muny Light. But at what cost? Cleveland income tax went from 1% to 1.5% to acquire funds to help pay Muny Light’s debts. Police and Fire Fighters were laid off and city departments were cut back. Outside of welfare recepients, the rest of us paying that additional 0.5% income tax was greater than the cost difference of electricity between Muny Light and the then Illuminating Co. Who really lost? The taxpayer.
Oh and during Kucinich’s mayoral term business tax collections took a steep downturn compared to the previous Mayor Perk and the next Mayor Voinovich, mostly due to Cleveland’s then anti-business attitude. And today we sorely need an infux of business to keep the residents from fleeing. Since 1990 (2 decades), the County has lost 9.8% of its total population, Cleveland an even higher percentage.
So keep up the anti-business attitude and watch the exodus of residents continue. Just remember your paycheck comes from some form of business. Think your employer is part of the evil business empire? Then man up, quit, and start your own business. Then the real lessons of survival begin.
Sorry….. But Cleveland’s default…that was then. Suck it up and move the hell on!

And by the way Ken….. Dennis stood up for the people against the machine, and it was the machine that bent us over without the option to use K-Y Jelly to ease the pain. So, PLEASE pull your head out of the Hershey Highway and check the facts out, of course that is if you can man up to do it.
We can’t just print money because that leads to inflation. I agree that we shouldn’t rely on a private banking system. How is a “Savings and Loan” institution possible with their objective being Profit motivated and when heir not issuing loans! Ending the wars doesn’t stop the need to pay those in the armed services, just means we pay them to sit on bases at home or somewhere else in the world. The federal government should go back to its historical roots where the states have most of the power to define what they want to be and allow competition between the states to help drive the economy, now that the federal governments role in growing large to help protect individuals during the civil rights movement from unfair state laws has for the most part been succssfull and laid to rest.
Joe D, your facts are not complete and are quite partisan. the mayor previous to dennis was selling off any item, not nailed down, in order to balance the budget of cleveland. because the previous mayor could not find ways to support the resources of cleveland, and because he was an early proponent of the no new taxes pledge, he gave the cleveland lakefront to the state in 1977-78, sold the old c.t.s. to the new regional r.t.a., sold the cleveland sewer system to the regional n.e.o.r.s.d. and those were just the big items. muny light, now cleveland public power, was next on the block to be sold when dennis became mayor. he refused. the 1/2% increase in the cleveland payroll tax was to balance a cleveland budget that was looking forward, under the previous mayor, to the receipts of another sale of cleveland resources–this time to a private corporation rather than to a regional agency. at best the sale would have been a very temporary patch in a long term problem.
dennis also wanted not to raise taxes, but when cleveland trust (later ameritrust, now a minor footnote in the history of key bank) as the lead cleveland bank refused to roll over the loans to city of cleveland–as they had done year after year under the previous mayor–he was forced to go for a tax increase. did i mention that cleveland trust had a people on the board of cleveland electric illuminating, the company that wanted to buy muny light, and c.e.i on the bank’s board?
all the money from the .05% tax went to balance the budget of cleveland, not to muny light. it is to be noted that the next mayor, george voinovich added another .05% payroll tax on top of the .05% that dennis did: so you are paying 2% today.
businesses were moving out of cleveland before dennis, and they continued after dennis. his two years as mayor is not the cause of cleveland’s problems. businesses will go where they will make money and moving from cleveland to mexico or singapore does not happen because of a mayor in office for but two years.

He’s been my Congressman since ’96…and I approved of him enough to keep re-relecting him…until he went all Don Quixote on Cleveland and began jousting with windmills…those stupid, pointless, and ridiculous Presidential “runs”.
He has fiddled while has Cleveland burned…lucky for us it was only figuratively, and we’ve bled jobs and lost 110,000 residents on his watch, which shows you how much he really did for his constituents. They have voted…with their feet!
Let him take his talents to Washington State or anywhere else he desires. Let them enjoy having a Congressman who looks like the star of the old “Dondi” comic strip…and acts like him, too.

Amazing how the conversatio turned from evaluation of his speech to personal attacks against him. This is exactly how the extreme right wingers and tea party morons think and react. He is right on all points! If only you stop hating, living in fear, and show an ounce of compasion and understanding. The truth will clearly present itself. I agree with Mr.Kucinich on two points. That is, end the wars and end the Bush tax cuts.We need to have temporary tax increases with cuts in everything, including welfare and miltary spending. Now, to give Medicare to all, where will the money come from for that? The subsidies for the health care industry most likely does not add up to what “Medicare for all” will cost.The Fed printing money at a whim will only decrease the value of the dollar and hurt the economy. I am a Conservative Independent with Libertarian leanings, so I do not like either party.
Can you tell me how everyone who becomes mayor of Cleveland ends up a multimillonaire? The job dosen’t pay that kind of money. How did they get rich while the City goes broke? They aquire homes and land for pennies on the dollar. They won’t let the average citzen do that.

Oh so Dennis saved Cleveland. Thank goodness. The city would really be broke and have no businesses coming in if we had not had him. The city wouldn’t have the huge population growth it currently has without him and his kind. The city wouldn’t have the sweet paved roads or the excellent services without these democrats and their honest representation of the constituents.In fact I realize now that since Dennis and the others we have attracted so many new businesses to Cleveland with nationally recognized names. Eaton,Plain Dealer manufacturing plant (the one that used to be the Cleveland plain dealer) Progressive insurance, British Petroleum….oh all the big ones are here,Yes it is true that we have CPP. A high school hiring company for city kids and of course the water department that is so corrupt that they will not explain to me a $2,000 water bill out of the blue. Before you go off on a tangent about Muni Light and its cost perhaps you should see how many businesses (mostly owned by conservative stockholders) use CPP instead of First Energy for their power needs. It has something to do with cost far less for similar service.
The powers at Cleveland Trust did not care about the residents and other businesses when blackmailing Dennis then to sell public assets to private enterprise no more than the repubs in congress care about the people now. Sounds a lot like the move afoot to give away public assets to private business today in Ohio.
They have their own special interests and it does not include the people Dennis Kucinich represents.

I love it when people start bitching about Unions… How about you do take a history class and see how the American worker was treated BEFORE Unions… If you want to work for a can of tuna and a toenail clip, by all means, do.
Without unions, the US would never have adopted the minimum wage, never would have had paid health care, and we’d still be working 80 and 90 hour weeks for almost no pay what so ever. Is that what you want for a fair nation?
