Driving school is a significant pit stop on the way to adulthood – mostly because it hammers in the lesson that grown ups have to knock off awkward, mindless, time-sucking items from checklist in order to get an official stamp. So you sit in a damp classroom learning which signal is left, which is right, then hop in a Geo with the instructor.
On the face of it, not many would opt voluntarily to kill time with someone who smells like wet newspaper and constantly drones on about the price gouging of cat littler (anyone else out there have Ms. F?). But, looking back, you have to give credit to people who have the stones to voluntarily ride shotgun with teen newbies taking a first crack at the interstate. In fact, it’s not really outside the realm of possibility that a driving instructor might need to fortify their will with liquid courage.
Last Friday, Eastlake police pulled over a student driver-mobile after the vehicle swerved on Route 91. Behind the wheel, a 45-year-old driving instructor. According to Newsnet5:
During the traffic stop officers found a half consumed bottle of vodka in the Euclid woman’s purse. Police also found a clipboard with students’ names and confirmed through a student, the instructor had just given a driving lesson. She was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

About 26 years ago while I was Stationed in Germany, there was a screw-up by the Armed Forces Radio Television Systems (AFRTS). Please understand Commercials from the United States were not allowed there (dont know if it has changed), so it was 5 years before I saw even a hint of a Budweiser or anything else that was a commercial from home on TV. At any rate, they made a big screw up one day while doing live editing. There was no picture except a person behind the wheel of a car and the audio blasted out, “Drinking and Driving, ( now the screw up) An American tradition ! ” I wonder if this woman was there and took it literally ?
I’d drink a half bottle of vodka if I looked like that too….geez.
