Via frenzied hair & makeup & TV news reports: At a Great Clips in Chilicothe, OH, (near Columbus), 49-year-old Jimmy Nguyen was so displeased with the haircut he received that he punched the manager in the face.

Those of us who’ve suffered a Great Clips haircut have likely acted out similar fantasies in our minds, though few of us punch our stylists in the face.

The manager was summoned to assist Nguyen’s stylist when the man began to vocally express his irritation, thrusting angry fingers of blame every which way. When the manager asked him to leave, he refused. Then he punched her in the face.

When later approached by the police as he was wandering among the gas pumps of a nearby Sam’s Club, Nguyen attempted to strike the officer as well. He missed.

Rough day for Nguyen, but come on. It’s Great Clips. What did he expect? Plus he’s bald, right? So, I mean, it couldn’t have been entirely the stylist’s fault. Nguyen was ultimately charged with assault and resisting arrest.

The manager was shaken up a bit, but has emotionally stabilized after the encounter.

  1. Excuse you!!! What do you mean “come on, its Great Clips?” What’s that’s suppose mean? I’ve been an employees there for almost a year and a half and my shop has the best girls ever… Don’t be throwing our name around like we aren’t worthy or something… Just because you had a bad experience its not the whole company’s fault its just that one stylist… I’m sick of people stereotyping us as a whole.. Sorry but I’m an amazing stylist and so are my girls… So keep your negativity to yourself and our company out of your mouth!!

  2. I’m not knocking Great Clips but as a hair stylist for over 30 years, I question anyone who would want to work for such a low-paying company that is more focused on quantity than quality. Anyone doing a haircut for $15 is short-changing themselves and the entire industry and NO quality haircut can happen in fifteen minutes. I personally feel that the only people who would be attracted to working there are those who don’t have much confidence in being able to make it in a “real” salon. And, lets be honest here…anyone going to Great Clips for their hair care services has some pretty low expectations.

  3. it’s a haircut. for the average guy a haircut is not a difficult endevor. I don’t need a stylist, I need a haircut. Nor in my 30 years of haircuts have I spent more then 15 dollars.

  4. Your wrong to put down great clips. It is an affordable cut for people who do not have cash to waste.

  5. If you don’t have cash to waste, buy a pair of clippers ($15, the price of one haircut), and then cut it yourself or with help from a friend. I did that all through college, and my hair looked just fine. Heck, you can even cut the hair of family and friends, and make a little bit of spare change in the process. Cutting hair really isn’t all that hard once you have a basic understanding of what you’re doing.

  6. Carol Ann, I was not putting Great Clips down, I was suggesting that the company focuses on quantity over quality. It’s budget hair and if that works for you, that’s great but you can’t go into a Great Clips and expect a great haircut. cjm, you’re completely wrong! Because you go to Great Clips you have no idea the amount of knowledge or technique needed to produce a great haircut. A quality haircut involves guidelines, weight lines, differing degrees of holding the hair and specific angles used when cutting. A stylist has to be able to analyze your face shape and determine the best cut for you. A quality haircut involves using different shears to create the effects you want. I keep six pair of scissors at all times and the least expensive pair cost me $369, the most expensive pair was $989. What you pay for in the price of a haircut is not the amount of time it takes to do it, nor the cost of producing a haircut…you’re paying for the pedigree of the stylist. I made it a point to go to as many educational events as I could in a year and exceeded my CEU’s by several hours each year. I brought that knowledge back to my clients to keep them up to date in trends and assuring them that I had been educated in my ability to perform them. And Adam Hall…that’s likely the worst advice I’ve ever heard! Do you know how much money hairstylists make by correcting someone’s f*ck up? We double our fees to fix someone else’s mistakes. Clipper cutting is likely the most difficult type of cut to do (unless it’s a complete buzz cut). The ability to properly blend from one length to another takes years to master. The difference between Great Clips and a great haircut is the difference between an acrylic sweater from Walmart and a casmire sweater from Boyds. They both cover you up just fine but one is made of a better quality product and looks and feels so much better.

  7. Another first world problem. Why aren’t we more grateful that this man’s life is so darn easy that he had time and emotion left to be a complete asshole over a haircut when he is so very obviously BALD??? This man needs a life, not a haircut.

  8. I have been master barber for 15 years.
Men need to go to a barber not Great Clips. As a barber I specialize in men’s cuts scissors but mostly clipper cuts and straight razor shaves.
I hate to say this but it’s honest…..
I have to fix these hair cuts all the time! Now I’m not saying there are not good stylists at great clips because some are but it seems like the Big picture is not so good. We have barbers and we have cosmetologists for a reason. Two different licenses and two totally different experiences.

  9. I’d rather pay my “stylist” than go to great clips.
It’s ok for the guys or tern boys but for a cut, color and style? No way!!!
They rush through the cut and cannot do modern techniques.
When you walk into a great clips and all the hair dressers have Farrah Faucet hair you better run.
Sorry but this is very true.

  10. Can you spell s-n-o-b? Shame on you for looking down your nose at others in the same profession.

  11. I’m not dropping down $40 every 3 weeks for a simplistic haircut. I understand if u have some advanced style going on. I dont. The one person on here simply doesn’t like the competition. They’d be happy if we all dumped that big money into their pockets.

  12. 1st of all, to all the negative comments about Great Clips, I left a full service salon to go to Great Clips because of the HIGH hourly rate! Here’s a little secret; I’m giving the same haircut to the people I charge $13, as I did the people I charged $50. It’s not WHERE you cut hair – it’s HOW you cut hair! 2nd, all cosmetologists take the same test. 3rd, guess what else we do at Great Clips, we correct ‘high end salon’ haircuts and then gain a new customer. BUT one thing we DO NOT offer at Great Clips, that some of you ‘high end stylist’ do: WE DON’T PUT DOWN OTHER STYLIST, ( it’s tacky ladies, not to mention unprofessional ). So before you rush to judgement, please consider the validity of your ‘facts’ and the impact that trash talking fellow hairdressers has on the industry.

  13. I am disgusted by this article and these comments. I have been with Great Clips for 5 years and I am the manager of my store. We are NOT about quantity. We ARE about quality! We have a specific way to do things to make sure each customer leaves happy and with a GREAT haircut. I am very advanced in my field and to read some of these comments that we don’t have the schooling or we don’t know what we are doing. I paid 13,000 dollars to go to a Paul Mitchell Beauty School and could go anywhere and get a job. I choose to stay with Great Clips because people don’t want to pay 45 dollars for a haircut. And it’s people like you who give us a bad name. You don’t know anything about my company, you assume. Just cause we charge 13-17 dollars for a haircut doesn’t mean it’s a bad cut. You can pay to get your hair shampooed or styled and then it’s the same price as a private salon. We charge a la carte because we know people don’t always want to get their hair washed, and styled. And to the person about color? We don’t color hair! So before you go and bash a company learn what they are about! Great Clips is only going up we are wiping out the competition as we educate people on us. I am disgusted that people in the same field as me is turning their nose down. As I do not bash you on your choice to work at a private salon.

  14. Wow! Some people just don’t have any couth, SHAME ON YOU, @ Joe Ho!
I’ve been a stylist over 25 years and I don’t need to bash other companies or their honest hard working employees, in order to have ‘confidence’ in my ‘ability to make it’, at ANY SALON, I chose to work at. It’s not where you go, to get a haircut that matters, it’s the professional that’s cutting your hair and their dedication to meeting your needs and providing you with the best service possible. Here’s a pro tip: GREAT CLIPS provides extensive technical training and on-going education regarding the latest trends. Accordingly you don’t need 6 pairs of shears to do that. In addition, not all customers have the time to sit in a salon and wait for you 1/2 an hour or more while you play catch up, ( 70% of Great Clips business is men). It’s the limited thinking and know-it-all attitude of stylists like you that promote ignorance with in our industry. We are all unique in our own way and we all chose to enter this profession because we felt we could make a positive impact in the everyday lives of the people we see. There’s a place for ALL OF US in this industry ( and again, I don’t need 6 shears to say that). I say it proud, “I WORK AT GREAT CLIPS!”

P.s.- I probably make more money than you, too!

  15. WALK RIGHT, IN SIT RIGHT DOWN
BABY LET YOUR HAIR HANG DOWN!
    RELAX YOUR AT GREAT CLIPS.

  16. I was drawn in by the $5.99 on sale haircut at a local Great Clips. The employee gashed and nicked my hair up so badly that it took 2 more haircuts to fix the damage. I was horrified by this woman and this so called haircut. I can’t believe they even hired her.

  17. The author attempts to be humorous yet comes across as an ass. Then this Joe Go dude acts like he’s Jesus Christ, but is a bigger add than the author. I am 59 years old. When I was younger and had the cash to spend at an award winning stylist, I had the best cuts ever. When I got married and put my wife through college, I was no longer able to afford this luxury. I found going to places like Best Cuts or Great Clips a money saver with minimal difference … depending on the stylist. After my wife finished college and we had dual income, I went to a high end salon. Needless to say, I had the worst cut ever and it took my clippers at home and Great Clips to fix it. Mr Ho, with the appropriate last name, you are a self righteous jerk. Take your high priced scissors and shove them up your ass. You are a piece of shot and I truly hope some of your customers read your comments. I’d never let an asshole cut my hair!!! Let’s hope your customers drop you … You dipshit!!!

  18. I worked for Great Clips for about 20 years after leaving 2 other full salons. One I charged $140 a haircut. I was right out of school I literally knew nothing more than the basics. I left after the owner treated me and everyone like crap. I tried Great Clips when I remained until I changed fields because of illness. They were great to me not only while sick but through my return to college. I pretty much made my own hours which was wonderful as a working college mom. I started at 19 back in 1989 so I also had 6 weeks of vacation a year. I had regular clients who treated me well along with feeling respected by the owners. The owner would come in to help on back to school crazy days. He would help at the desk and sweep hair for us when the receptionist was busy. I cared and loved helping people so don’t knock it until you try it.
