Saturday evening, the mayor and other dignitaries officially reopened the redesigned and rehabbed Market Square Park at West 25th and Lorain. The celebration also marked the kickoff of a summer’s worth of festivities honoring the 100th anniversary of the West Side Market across the street. Thousands gathered to eat free ice cream from Mitchell’s and free pretzels from Sterle’s, listen to Latin and polka music, watch Irish and Hungarian dancers, and listen to politicians — including Mayor Jackson, Counclman Joe Cimperman, Council President Marty Sweeney, and Congressman Dennis Kucinich — present banners and proclamations to families who have had stands at the market since its inception.
