“I was just hiding behind the couch! Don’t shoot!”
Tremont West Development Corporation and Ohio City Incorporated are teaming up to hire a Safety Coordinator.

The new hire will work with residents in both neighborhoods and with the Cleveland Division of Police’s Second District to address safety issues and initiate safety-related programs.

Via a job posting, the Safety Coordinator will manage existing safety programs, including the safety camera program, and will work to raise funds for new safety-related causes within the near west side neighborhoods.

The safety coordinator will respond to resident needs — Busted sidewalk? Call the Safety Coordinator! — and liaise with individual block clubs and the police.

You can send your application materials to careers@ohiocity.org, with “Safety Coordinator” in the subject line. Applicants will be accepted through Tuesday, January 31st at 5:00 p.m.

Cleveland City Councilman Kerry McCormack, a former Ohio City Inc. community relations dude, will no doubt be relieved to siphon off a few phone calls from residents with “non-emergency safety issues.”

Sam Allard is a former senior writer at Scene.

  1. I fail to find much humor in your accompanying photo & caption. Maybe the freakin’ moron behind it should be forced to look down the business end of a gun, & then let me know how funny it is. Unless you’re planning on destroying (i.e. killing) something, you NEVER point a gun @ a person or an animal, EVEN IN JEST. Piss poor effort on your part, Scene. Shame on you.

  2. Pointing a firearm at a kitten? Not funny at all, in very poor taste, and rather offensive.
Even the ashes of Eliot Ness , former Cleveland Safety Director (1935-1942), are not so amused.

  3. First off, you are right, never point a gun at anyone or a animal. However, it is a poorly photo shopped image.

  4. They’re all right. HOW DARE YOU POST THE MOST OFTEN POSTED PHOTO OF A KITTEN FROM A GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH YOU MONSTERS!!!

  5. I fail to see why we should keep the ‘west side’ safe when the east side has far more crimes. If these development corps are teaming up to initiate safety efforts, why can’t it be done for all neighborhood organizations? This just feels extremely biased towards the west side yuppies.

  6. @ladycle : if you study urban revival you will see the trend has been to focus on a few chic residential neighborhoods and to then encourage development on the fringes. It’s happened successfully in Chicago Milwaukee Pittsburgh. Over time the less chic marginal neighborhoods benefit. Starting on a few chic neighborhoods is working in Cleveland. The tax base is increasing and that is driving gains for Cleveland.

I’m sure the east side neighborhoods could do this too. It’s up to their development neighborhoods to decide.
