Who has the biggest wind turbine in North America? We have the biggest wind turbine in North America. Damn straight.

Cleveland Magazine reports that parts for the behemoth arrived this morning at the port. How big is this sucker, which will be installed at the Lincoln Electric Company in Euclid, gonna be?

* From its base to the tip of the blade, it’s 443 feet tall. That’s 23 feet taller than Cedar Point’s Top Thrill Dragster.
* Each of the three blades are 165 feet long. Stacked end to end, they’d be taller than Terminal Tower.
* The turbine is about three times taller than the 147-foot wind turbine at the Great Lakes Science Center.
* Our new wind turbine is the largest in North America, according to County Prosecutor William D. Mason, Chairman of the Great Lakes Energy Development Task Force.

  1. Vestas makes a 3MW wind turbine in the US with 112 meter rotor diameter. Clipper Windpower has been deploying 2.5MW turbines since 2006. How is this the biggest?

  2. [In the post apocalyptic future. The Mason has reduced Bartertown’s power supply]

Fitzgerald: For God’s sake, what now?

    The Mason: Who run Bartertown?

Fitzgerald: Dammit, I told you, no more embargos.

    The Mason: More, Mason.

[the Mason puts all power out]

The Mason: Who run Bartertown? Who… run… Bartertown?

    Fitzgerald: …You know who.

    The Mason: Say.

    Fitzgerald: Master Mason.

    The Mason: Say loud!
[the Master turns on the town loudspeakers]

    Fitzgerald: Master Mason.

    The Mason: Master Mason… what?

    Fitzgerald: Master Mason runs Bartertown.

    The Mason: Louder!

    Fitzgerald: Master Blaster runs Bartertown!

    The Mason: Lift embargo.
[the Mason turns power back on]

  3. Arrived from where?
Please tell me it was built in the US. However, I suspect not.
Are we substituting our dependence on Middle East oil for a
dependance on European built wind turbines and Chinese built batteries?

Regardless, it is a step in the right direction. Good for Lincoln Electric.

  4. Hooray for the Lincoln Electric Co., a “can-do” company with a
    “can-do” attitude. J.Behe (Lanly Co.)

  5. I am a student in Lorain County Community College’s Wind Turbine program. This is not the biggest turbine in N. America. Two turbines that I know of that are bigger off hand are:

    1. Vestas 3MW
    112m (368ft) rotor dia.
Hub heights vary, but taller than Kenersys’s
    2. GE 2.5MW TC3
    103m (338ft) rotor dia.
    100m (328ft) hub height
151.5m (497ft) from ground to tip of blade

The Clipper Windpower 2.5MW Liberty wind turbine is about the same size as Kenersys’s.

I’m glad to see Lincoln doing this. It’s great to see more wind turbines going up in Ohio.
