CINCINNATI — The right to protest is powerful, and Ohioans fighting for social justice can learn how to ensure their voices are heard at an online event this evening.

According to Robin A. Wright at Cincinnati’s Beloved Community Church, protests throughout history have been used as legitimate and meaningful passports to reform. She noted that this also is what led to charges being filed against the former Minneapolis police officer in the death of George Floyd.

“It wasn’t because people got together and had a nice conversation around diversity and inclusion; it was because Minneapolis was on fire,” she said. “Not that I’m saying, ‘Go burn stuff down,’ but it was the protest — people saying, ‘Enough is enough’ — that moved that district to act.”

Wright and other community organizers are joining the ACLU of Ohio for an online event, “Gear Up for this Moment: Activist Day of Virtual Training.” From 6 to 8 p.m. today, they plan to coach participants in strategies for peaceful, coordinated and strategic action.

Wright said there’s a lot more to an effective protest than just gathering with signs. She’ll discuss connecting action to larger strategies. This means how to decide on the messaging of a protest, the desired outcome, and a direct action.

“Is there a petition that you’re trying to circulate, right during the protest, that people can tap into?” she said. “How do you connect the call to action and the focus, so that you’re scheduling and structuring your protest to actually get at the goal?”

She said the training also will include information on how to keep protests as peaceful as possible.

“We’re seeing reports all over the nation of people joining these peaceful protests and using it as a cover to create chaos, anarchy and destruction,” she said. “And so, training people on what’s called ‘marshaling,’ so that there’s people who are helping to manage the group.”

Other topics will include maintaining protesters’ health and safety, protesters’ rights and the principles of nonviolent direct action.

Event information is online at eventbrite.com.

  1. Protesters should police their own, because violent protesters inflict great harm on their cause.
Perhaps, violent protesters think that they are accomplishing a greater good by victimizing innocent people, who had nothing to do whatsoever with what they are grieving about, but to many– if not most Americans– trying to achieve political change by intimidation, fear, and violence against innocent civilians is a form of terrorism.

  2. Shooting and looting started: 400 years ago………………………

Shooting, looting, scalping, lynching , Raping, torturing their way across the continent—400 years ago

White Colonial settler thugs launched this endless crimson tide leaving yellow crime scene tape crisscross…

Shooting Seneca, Seminole, Creek ,Choctaw, Mohawk, Cayuga, Blackfeet,

Shooting Sioux, Shawnee, Chickasaw, Chippewa before Looting Lakota land; Looting Ohlone Land—

Looting Ashanti, Fulani, Huasa, Wolof, Yoruba, Ibo, Kongo, Mongo, Hutu, Zulu…Labor.

Shooting and looting started: 400 years ago………………………

  3. caucasoid, let’s keep it real!– that is, man have been victimizing man far longer than 400 years ago, even in America.
For instance, American Indian tribes often conducted raids against each other.
African tribes did the same against each other in Africa.
Vikings, Mongols, Huns, etc… did the same in Europe and Asia.
The Aztecs did the same in Mexico and Central America.
However, this doesn’t mean that using violence, fear, and intimidation to achieve political goals is a justified or reasonable method of protest, because it isn’t.
Instead, it is a form of terrorism, and reasonable protesters should not want the violent actions of terrorists turning public opinion against them and their cause.

  4. Two excerpts from Ted Diadiun’s excellent column in this morning’s P.D.:

Across the nation, people were united in their horror and calls for justice. It was a moment that could have rallied people together – left and right, black, white and brown — a moment for cohesion and understanding, and perhaps for healing.

And then … protesters who turned out in cities all over the country to express their anger and frustration were joined by arsonists, looters and thugs — or became those things themselves. And they threw it all away.”

Next to the Heinen’s downtown, which is now closed indefinitely, stood a little cupcake shop that has been there for 10 years, and had just reopened after weeks of being closed due to the coronavirus. Colossal Cupcakes owner Kelly Kandah told Fox8 News that she thought if she showed the protesters that she was there, they wouldn’t hurt anyone and would leave her shop alone. Instead, she and her employees were chased into a back bathroom by a hail of bricks and paint cans, where they listened as the shop was taken apart piece by piece.

”Everything is gone or destroyed,” she said. ”The chandeliers are ripped down, the actual cupcake cases are gone. They took our princess chairs and used them to destroy other cases. There is nothing left in there, just glass.”

Rationalize all you wish, but George Floyd’s death can’t be honored or avenged by trashing a cupcake shop.

  5. “Looting Ashanti, Fulani, Huasa, Wolof, Yoruba, Ibo, Kongo, Mongo, Hutu, Zulu…Labor.”

How absolutely hysterical! Half those tribes captured and sold other blacks in to slavery!

And where is the biggest problem with slavery in the world right now? Africa.

  6. What about blaming our illustrious local leadership instead??? After all, they are the incompetent fools who allowed all this destruction take place at the city’s doorstep!!!

All these local politicians know how to do is to steal every last dollar they can from us folks that actually have to work and own property in this dump of a city and county!!!

It’s time to recall Taxin Jackson, and cohort thief Budish out of office now!!!

  7. Hay Caucasoid, BLAME ENGLAND for what happened here. The USA did not exist when the evil of slavery came to these shores. ENGLAND brought it and profited. Within a generation and a half of its founding, the USA fought a war to end slavery.

  8. Scene first edited, then added a notation claiming satire then deleted the article by Pete Kotz first entitled

“Dear America, 5 Places to Target Next Time You Go Rioting.”

    It was then changed to:

“Dear America: 5 Better Places to Direct Your Anger Than Your Local Business”

    Then noted with:

(Editor’s note: This piece is clearly satirical, it should be emphasized Scene in no way condones violence. Direct action includes voting, donations and using your voice.)

    Then out right deleted.

I saved a copy of the original, and a copy of the edited and I’m sending them over to Tony George’s Lawyers right now. Think this may strengthen their case against The Zelman Borothers, The Euclid Media Group, Scene Magazine and Little Vinny Grzegorek.

I’m also sending copies to Wells Fargo, JP Morgan, Amazon, The University of Phoenix and every local Gun Shop in Cuyahoga and every adjacent counties.

I’m going to dedicate my next week to attacking you the same way you helped attack America.

    You guys are fucked.

  9. No Compromise, No Retreat:

    Justice for Tamir Rice,……………………….

    Justice for George Floyd ………………….

Chagrin Falls here we come !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! White Folks worst nightmare……

    Krackers r befuddled

No Compromise, No Retreat: No Compromise, No Retreat No Compromise, No Retreat

  10. Communists are using police brutality incidents to trick the blacks into fighting in their revolution. These “allies” don’t tell the black people they are fighting for the oppressive system of communism.

  11. Don’t get yourself a federal case, caucasold.
The FBI are investigating the violent protests that took place in Cleveland last weekend.
They are probably monitoring what is being posted on CleveScene.
If they question you, don’t forget that lying to a FBI agent is a violation of 18 U.S. Code § 1001, which makes it a federal offense and punishable up to 5 years in federal prison.
However, if the lie involves domestic terrorism, which the violent protests can arguably be construed as, it is punishable up to 8 years in prison.

  12. No Compromise, No Retreat:

    ….

    Blah Blah Blah.

Let me tell you exactly what you are going to do.
You will do exactly what you do between every other riot.
You will go back to killing yourselves.

  13. Hey caucasucker

    From above:
“You will go back to killing yourselves.”

See! you’re back to your usual already!

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WJW) – A 12-year-old boy killed in Cleveland Monday has been identified.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the child as Donell H. King.
The shooting took place in the 3100 block of E. 94th St. around 1:30 p.m.
    Donell died at the hospital.

  14. “Using the Power of Protest to Propel Social Change”

What do you say we look at this from a bit more honest perspective shall we?

“Using the power of rioting and looting to piss off and alienate people to the point where they are no longer sympathetic to your cause”

    There fixed it for ya!

  15. “I’m going to dedicate my next week to attacking you the same way you helped attack America.
    You guys are fucked.”

    ….

You need to send that original copy to legal departments of The NRA, Wells Fargo, University of Phoenix, Amazon, Chase and that gun store in Philly where the kid broke in and got his skull evacuated!

Lawyers on retainer (or on staff) with too much time on their hands – they could make the Scene disappear like a fart in a hurricane!

I’d love to see it happen.

BTW Congratulations Pete on a lovely article! You be sure to stop by the kids funeral in Philly and tell his family about your wonderful suggestions!

  16. “Chagrin Falls here we come !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! White Folks worst nightmare……

    Krackers r befuddled”

Your not kidding! All those people sitting on the patio having lunch at M where I just passed look like they didn’t know if the red or white went with the fish.

    Looks like you got ’em!

  17. They’re trying to scrub the internet of any and all records of the “Dear America: 5 Better Places to Target Next Time You Go Rioting” article.

Good thing multiple copies and screenshots were made.

Better start looking for some more donations now boys,.you’re gonna need ’em

    A snippet:

The NRA No one’s done more to stoke our culture of violence than the gun industry, led by its lobbying arm, the National Rie Association. They’re the guys who think slaughtered school kids are a small price to pay for “freedom,” but storm the nearest state capitol if they’re asked to wear a mask. The NRA’s principal achievement: Giving America a murder rate ve times that of any other country in the industrialized world. It’s blocked everything from a ban on assault ries to universal background checks to red ag laws allowing police to temporarily take guns from the mentally unstable. Fortunately, the group’s been diminished by its own circular ring squad and a president who burns through his members’ dues like a Palm Beach trophy wife. But if you want to turn your rage into something more productive than burning down a restaurant or a sporting goods store, torch the nearest gun shop. The University of Phoenix A college degree has long been the avenue to equality for those who start on unequal footing. There to prey upon your journey will be the University of Phoenix. The alleged school has a long history of defrauding students. Its specialty is convincing people unsuited for college – or unable to pay for it – into loading up with unmanageable debt in exchange for the elusive promise of a subpar degree. It’s been caught deceiving students about programs and job placement rates. Its recruiters were once barred from military bases for signing up soldiers with little chance of graduating, if only gorge from their piles of federal aid. In December, it paid a $191 million ne and canceled student debt for fraudulently claiming partnerships with companies like Microsoft and Twitter. It’s also been caught violating federal law by paying bonuses more students they enroll. Wells Fargo to recruiters for the There is perhaps no greater symbol of unequal justice than the country’s fourth largest bank. You likely know this ne institution from its massive racketeering case , in which it opened 565,443 credit card accounts without their customers’ knowledge, then quietly racked up fees, interest charges, and overdraft protection payments. Had this giant swindle been committed by anyone else, it would have meant years in prison. Instead, some 5,000 lower level employees took the fall, and not a single ranking executive was charged. This is American justice in a nutshell. Wells Fargo has also been caught rigging municipal bond bids, discriminating against black and Hispanic borrowers, and illegally servicing student loans. Again: Not one exec went to jail for these sins. That’s because within American justice, the mighty are sent to the VIP lane, where criminal charges are rarely considered, and simple nes are the order of the day. Since 2000, the bank has paid $21 billion for its many, many sins. While this may seem a lot, Wells Fargo generated $86 billion last year, meaning it takes less than six months to pay the penalties for a crime spree running decades. Amazon warehouses Meet the world’s leading company in weaponizing technology against its own workers. With apologies to meatpacking plants and Walmart, Amazon warehouses are the closest we come to recreating a plantation economy. From the moment they clock in, to the moment they clock out, workers are tracked their entire shifts to ensure a grueling pace on behalf of the world’s richest man. One employee said she was required to scan 1,800 packages an hour.

  18. According to the US Department of Justice statistics………………..

84 percent of white people killed every year are killed by other whites.

    Btw: Shiwaku Seven ………………….
The FBI would be justified in investigating Trump, George Papadopoulos, Michael Flynn

Me ???? not so much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. seriously this mary beech can frig the frig off with her bull sheet. We know she does this because she’s a ju.

  20. caucasold, you sound like an agitator. You really should think twice about what you post, because you don’t seem to realize that there are exceptions to the right of free speech.
For example, The Supreme Court has held that “advocacy of the use of force” is unprotected when it is “directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action” and is “likely to incite or produce such action”. Your comments are so radical, you are red-flagging yourself.
