Movie series resumes -- with a side of java.

Beer Drinkers in Space Showgirls: Fully Exposed Edition
After taking nearly a year off from hosting Talkies’ popular Movie Night, owner Chris Keller is back in business, serving up vintage flicks and steaming cups of coffee. Tonight, she unspools 1938’s Sex Madness -- a sexploitation fave featuring lesbians, STDs, and extramarital romps in the sack.

The film-and-coffee bar has been around since 2000, when Keller opened it in homage to the movie-packed matinees she used to see as a kid. An old-fashioned popcorn machine even dispenses buttery and salty goodies during Talkies’ screenings. Audiences can also nosh on homemade macaroni and cheese, chili, and pizza. “Be comfortable, eat something, and watch a film,” says Keller. “I don’t like to be in a crammed theater. That’s why you’ll never see me at the movies on a Friday or Saturday night.”

Keller stopped screening movies last summer because it was costing too much to license the rights to show them. So don’t expect to see Ghost Rider anytime soon on Talkies’ big screen. The bar pretty much sticks to documentaries and indies that are in the public domain. “We really cater to the older classics and independents,” says Keller, who also taps her private collection of 1,000 movies for the twice-weekly event. This month’s lineup includes Tillie’s Punctured Romance (starring Charlie Chaplin), Fahrenheit 9/11, and the 2005 doc, Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price. “I’m getting back to the movies,” says Keller. “Classic films and coffee just seem to go together.”
