Shopping Under the Influence: Promotion gives new meaning to “Shop ‘til you drop”

The three-martini lunch may be history, but if our pals at Woodmere’s upscale Eton-Chagrin Boulevard shopping center have their way, the days of tipsy Christmas shopping are just beginning. Long the domain of gin-addled housewives whiling away their empty hours with a bottle of Beefeater in one hand and the QVC phone number in the other, drunken shopping may not be such a bad thing, actually, what with consumer spending being the only thing standing between the U.S. economy and financial ruin. So do the patriot thing: Lower your inhibitions, then go spent gobs of money. Five of Eton’s restaurants are standing by to help grease the economic wheels, with featured martinis offering seasonal twists. At Bravo! Cucina Italiano, for instance, that means The Nightcap, a shot of espresso complemented by Starbucks liquor, Bailey’s, and Stoli Vanilla. At Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, watch out for Blue Ice, a concoction of Blue Curaçao, Sky Citrus Vodka and pineapple juice. Mitchell’s Fish Market whips up a Blizzard, with Godiva White Liquor, Absolute Vodka, Crème de Cacao, vanilla ice cream and crushed OREO cookies. At Taza, it’s Mistletoe Madness, with Stoli Orange, lime juice, splash of cranberry juice and pomegranate liquor. And at Paladar, there’s the Grinch, a combination of rum, muddled lime and mint, topped off with a splash of soda. Price per tini varies at each restaurant, from $5.95 to $7.95. The promotion continues through Christmas Eve. --- Elaine T. Cicora
