Aliver Hall build skyscraper songs that cement classic rock to granola grooves. The Akron quintet's debut album bridges five six-minute free-flow rock jams with six instrumental segues that vary from funk to blues to punk. Long-haired architects Alex Hall and Jim Tauscher lead the band with crisscrossing guitars and vocals, carving out compositions that recall classic Phish mongers ("Crazy"), Grateful Dead trips ("Caged"), and forest-loving Fleet Foxes ("Broken Impressions"). Though it clocks in at only 35 minutes, Welcome to Aliver Hall is stuffed with solos. But even without all the never-ending noodling, there's plenty to enjoy here. — Keith Gribbins
