Despite a highly visible location in one of Ohio’s densest neighborhoods, Five Guys Burgers failed to make it much past the three-year mark.
The store, located on Detroit Avenue in the heart of Lakewood, abruptly closed its doors on Saturday, Feb. 2. What’s more surprising is that in addition to being a restaurant location, the property also served as regional corporate headquarters.
Residents and business owners in the area had no prior warning, getting all of their info from a letter taped to the front door that thanked patrons for their support. “Regretfully, after three years of being part of the wonderful Lakewood community, Five Guys Lakewood will be closing its doors.”
“I heard they were struggling — they weren’t doing as well as they expected,” says Dan Deagan, owner of nearby Deagan’s Kitchen. “If there were more than four people eating in there when I walked by, I’d be surprised.”
Attempts to reach a spokesperson for Five Guys have been unsuccessful.

I said it the first time after I ate at Five Guys that the place was overrated! They better drop their prices or they will eventually be gone. Plus the name “Five Guys” doesn’t quite appeal to the masses like “In-N-Out”. Just sayin….
High fat, high calorie, and at a high cost; not the choice of the hipsters, the oldsters and the creative class that’s starting to come into its own in Lakewood. The Root, I notice, has really taken off in the same time period that it took Five Guys to close down.
I’ve never eaten at the Lakewood location, but I’ve never had a bad experience or burger at five guys. I’ll give Jim the high fat, high calorie argument, but I’ve never gone into a five guys thinking “I’ll keep it healthy here today.” Very surprised they closed, that franchise seemed to be expanding all over the place.
maybe the idea of a $7.00 burger was a bit much….tasted like what i make at home and i can make a couple of them for $7.00…hope the new place downtown with the $9.00 on the csu campus is paying attention…or it will be the next to go!
I don’t eat out that frequently and I’m hardly a ‘man about town’, but I live less than a mile and a half from there and had no idea there was a Five Guys located there. Perhaps a lack of advertising did them in?
I live in Westpark and I did not know there was a Five Guys in Lakewood. I’ve been going to Westgate location all this time.
7 bucks for a burger that is unmemorable at best….THen fries and a drink get you in the neighborhood of 14 bucks…OVERRATED…
