[image-1]Crain’s Cleveland, in a story published this weekend about investment along Lorain Avenue, reported that MetroHealth had purchased the Hollywood Video site on Lorain between W. 38th Street and Fulton Road.

“The Dec. 6 sale…defuses the bitter debate between neighbors and plans to install a McDonald’s restaurant on the site,” wrote reporter Stan Bullard.

City Councilman Kerry McCormack was not immediately available for comment. Nor was Ohio City Inc. Executive Director Tom McNair.

But MetroHealth’s Media Relations Manager Tina Arundel confirmed the report in a phone call with Scene and reiterated that though there aren’t many details yet, MetroHealth is “committed to working with the neighborhood, elected officials, and community partners” to determine the scope of services at the new facility. She said more details would be made available soon.

Arundel said that in light of the recent controversy over the proposed McDonald’s at that location, MetroHealth will be especially attentive to residents’ concerns and wishes.

Former Cleveland City Councilman and current Global Cleveland President Joe Cimperman cautioned back in 2013 that McDonald’s, which was denied a conditional use permit on the site because it failed to meet the requirements of a Pedestrian Residential Overlay (PRO), wasn’t quite “Ohio City-istic” enough.

The jury is still out on whether a MetroHealth facility will align with the aesthetic and spiritual essences of the neighborhood in its current form.

  1. McDonald’s will probably take over the site previously owned by Bodnars Funeral home on W 41st and Lorain. Closer to St. Ignatius and the I 90 Exit.

  2. Bodnars is at W41st, which is west of the old Hollywood Video store….it’s further away from St. Ignatius… closer to the exit, though.

The big thing is……. Bodnars is still in business.

  3. McDonald’s went to Bodnars first but the building is protected under the land mark district.
Under the regs, drive throughs are not allowed in the PRO district.

  4. Why did I get downvoted? Bodnars is not closer to Ignatius, and it is STILL in business. Go eat some more McDs it’s good for your brains

  5. Ohio City residents stopped the location from becoming a McDonalds a few years ago, please stop painting MetroHealth as the hero in a battle that was won long before this deal was struck.

  6. I think it’s great that there will finally be something in the blighted shell of the old video store. But, I think it has been incredibly shortsighted of those who think they’ve won by blocking earlier development attempts. How many neighborhood centric jobs are being created by Metro dropping a clinic in there? How much benefit will the neighborhood receive out of having a clinic there? Will those working there be supporting the neighborhood in any fashion – buying houses, shopping, taking advantages of the prostitutes?
All these folks have done is fight real business, McDonald’s or not, and add yet another nonprofit with no benefit to their neighborhood.

  7. the mcdonald’s at fulton and lorain was stopped temporarily a few years ago, BHALLOHIO, it was not permanent. mcdonald’s was appealing the zoning decision made by the city and it seemed that they were in for the long haul to try to put a drive-thru there. only the property owner now selling the site to someone else made it a permanent victory.

  8. ME. your comment misses the detail that the mcdonald’s proposed was only the mcdonald’s at 7015 detroit moved over. there was going to be no gain of jobs for cleveland’s west side. i will take mcdonald’s word that there would be no loss of jobs with 2 different franchises (the other at 3211 clark–one mile) competing at close range. but regardless no new jobs.

and it is much more likely that those who work at the metro clinic will buy a hot dog at the inn or a beer at platform brewery or go to the west side market or rent or buy a house than those who would have worked at a mcdonald’s there. as far as who would be “taking advantage of the prostitutes” there i will leave that to your judgment since you are interested in that.

  9. Beware of MetroHealth facilities. If you use their “urgent care” or express care, they bill you as if you’ve gone to the hospital emergency room. One 20 minute sick visit and you will accrue over $700.00 of billed hospital charges. THEY SUCK.

  10. Sorry to say, Bodnar-Mahoney Funeral Home is not still operating in the neighborhood. We could not get permissions to add the necessary services to continue due to neighborhood opposition so we have sold the real estate and moved to Brook Park.

  11. these are the most hypocritical self-righteous elitist snobs ever!! so they’re okay with Wendy’s operating just a few blocks away–and, horrors, across from St Ig, fast food corruption here–but a business repurposing long vacant eyesore that will give jobs to local teens is bad? And for the talk of “aesthetics”– we’re talking desolate, run-down neighborhood with vacant buildings.
