Art Is Alive at Lake View Cemetery

There’ll be a little walking and a lot of ruminating during this morning’s two-hour tour of Lake View Cemetery, a.k.a. “Cleveland’s outdoor museum.” Leading the Lake View Luminaries tour is Dale Hilton, director of teaching and learning in the education and interpretation department of the Cleveland Museum of Art (or as we like to call it, “ Cleveland’s indoor museum”). “Lake View contains so much exceptional sculpture, architecture, mosaic work, and stained glass,” coos Hilton. “It’s a perfect spot for taking in an array of late 19th-century art.” Among the highlights, Hilton will be taking tourists into the incomparable Wade Memorial Chapel, with its breathtaking mosaic interior by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Another stop is at the John Hay Memorial: a heroic statue of the archangel Michael, whose arms rest in perpetuity on a sword set across a lectern. Hilton says to expect six to eight stops, “depending on the amount of discussion that takes place.” Walkers step off from the Garfield Monument at 10 a.m. Cost is $7.
