Acoustic Tuma
Enter-Exit
(self-released)
Chris Tuma, Lakewood-based singer-songwriter, first gained some popularity in the late '90s on the local rock circuit. He moved out of town for a spell, but returned a few years ago and adopted a rootsier sound. His new album mixes folk, pop and psychedelic rock and has a decidedly experimental approach. Tracks like "Away" and "Enter the World" feature gruff vocals and retro-leaning melodies that sound like David Bowie if he were singing and playing in slow motion. "Exit the World" features an impressive guitar solo and has a laid-back, Bob Marley-like vibe to it. Tuma certainly has a singular sound (on his Reverb Nation site, his eclectic influences include Beck, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Flaming Lips and Wilco), but the music here is so off-kilter, it's not likely to find a very wide audience. We assume that's really okay with Tuma, who's been happy to exist on the fringes of the local scene.
Acoustic Tuma performs at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, at Mahall's.
