Local reggae promoter Packy Malley has big plans for the Slovenian Workman’s Home located at 15335 Waterloo Rd. near the Beachland Ballroom. Rechristened Packy Malley’s Bar, the new space celebrates its grand opening on Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7. The grand ballroom will be used for special occasions like the grand opening.
Carlos Jones & the PLUS Band and the Ark Band will perform at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Admission will be $10. The Jim Lasko psychedelic light show will set up that night too, and Jamaican food will also be available in the ballroom. St. Lucian steel drummer Deighton Charlemagne will perform in the bar. That show starts at 7 p.m. and admission to it is free. On Saturday night, DJ MICK (formally Mick Boogie) will fly in from New York to man the wheels of steel.
Since Malley is the Vice President of Corporate Sales and Fundraising for the 80-year-old Malley’s Chocolates, Packy Malley’s Bar will feature a Malley chocolate stout and a special Malley chocolate martini.
Malley has hosted his annual Mid West Reggae Fests for the last 24 years. He’s also a popular wedding DJ. Additionally, Malley serves on the Board of Governors of the Ohio State Alumni Association. He plans to turn his bar into a spot for sports parties .
“The bar will be a neighborhood bar first and foremost!,” writes Malley in a press release. “ A comfortable pub with a great selection of beers, great cocktails, good food, and a variety of music from Irish to reggae, with rock bands too! I want to the bar to reflect Cleveland! Local brews and local music!”
He plans to have karaoke and trivia nights too. Malley also intends to develop a shuttle service between the Gordon Square area, West 25th, Tremont, downtown and Waterloo. “It would be a great! It would be a fun and safe way to go to different neighborhoods without hitting the pocketbook too hard,” he says. “If all the neighborhoods pitched in, it could be very affordable.”
